Étude Winter Guard Breaks History with Silver Medal Finish in Independent World Class Finals

The 2024 season was one for the history books as Étude Winter Guard earned its first-ever silver medal in the highly competitive Independent World Class Finals. Under the direction of Brian Franco-Winn and the artistic vision of Byron Valentine, Étude delivered a season of remarkable achievements, culminating in a breathtaking performance at WGI World Championships.

Record-Breaking Moments Throughout the Season

This season saw Étude reaching new heights from the very start. In their first regional, the ensemble posted their highest opening score in history, setting the tone for what would become an unforgettable journey. Throughout WGI, the competition was incredibly tight. At one point, there was only a 0.5-point spread between the top four groups, with Étude sitting in fourth place heading into Finals.

But on the final night, Étude rose to the occasion, securing a silver medal finish—an achievement that marked a historic moment for the ensemble and left the entire Winter Guard community in awe.

“Those Days Are Gone” – A Silver-Worthy Performance

Étude’s 2024 program, “Those Days Are Gone,” was a moving exploration of the passage of time and the nostalgia that comes with it. The show resonated deeply with audiences and judges alike, blending sophisticated choreography, innovative digital design, and an emotionally charged soundtrack. Every element of the production was meticulously crafted, from the stunning visual design to the intricately layered soundtrack by Vince Oliver.

The ensemble, dressed in custom designs by Byron Valentine and Kailey Portwood for FJM, Inc., brought the story to life with haunting beauty. Digital designs by Scott Winters, Ross Werner, and Byron Valentine added a modern, almost surreal dimension to the performance, enhancing the emotional weight of the program.

A Talented and Unified Team

The 2024 season was a team effort, with every member of the staff and cast contributing to Étude’s success. In addition to Brian Franco-Winn and Byron Valentine’s leadership, the talented design, choreography, and technical team—featuring Emma Boyce, Zane Franco-Winn, Melissa Davis, Benjamin Thomas Henley, Michael Gaines, Brandon Nichols, and many more—ensured that every detail of the production was perfectly polished.

The ensemble was led on the floor by Emma Adcock and Korey Craven, whose leadership was instrumental in fostering a sense of unity and drive within the group. With choreography that pushed the limits of artistry and technique, Étude’s performance was the perfect balance of grace, power, and precision.

A Historic Finish

Earning a silver medal in the fiercely competitive Independent World Class is a monumental achievement for any group, and Étude’s 2024 journey will be remembered as a season that redefined what the ensemble is capable of. The cast and staff not only made history but did so in a way that captured the spirit of excellence and innovation that Étude has always represented.
